DISCRIMINATION

Discrimination happens when a person, or a group of people, is treated less favorably than another person or group because of their background or certain personal characteristics. This is known as ‘direct discrimination’.

Types of discrimination.

• age
• disability, or
• race, including color, national or ethnic origin, or immigrant status.
• sex, pregnancy, marital or relationship status, family responsibilities, or breastfeeding
• sexual orientation, gender identity, or intersex status.

 

While working in woollies, I got my thumb sliced by the slicer. When the incident happened, I was unaware of the damage and did not react much.  But when I came back from the hospital and sit in front of the manager and assistant manager. Both were very to me, and they said how did it happen? And the assistant store manager said to me I am pretty sure he did not do his training properly. I replied to them I have done all my training properly and this is not the right time to say all this. Furthermore, the store manager became more aggressive with me when he knew that I must go through surgery to get my thumb fixed. Even though I haven’t gone through my surgery he asked me to come to work and said you are not going to get any money. That was my first work injury, so I was not sure how to deal with it. And where to go and explain my case and pain. After a while discussed this with multiple professionals. Everyone suggested that you to go the union and explain to them exactly what happened to you. When I went to the union and discussed my case with them unluckily did not get a positive response from the union. Then I decided to go to people services. It is an internal department in Woolworths. They listen to the employees’ problems but after being stuck with them for more than months. I have decided to leave that store. That was such a bad experience I have got from professionals and a professional organization. So, the treatment I got was very inappropriate and unprofessional. In the future, if something happens at my work that I will find unfair I will coordinate with a lawyer from day one and let the company know to coordinate with a lawyer instead of contacting me
